Staten Island, N.Y. - Gateway National Recreation Area announced today some basic visitor services will reopen using revenue generated by recreation fees. Basic services include re-opening bathrooms, collecting garbage, picking up litter, and plowing of roads to visitor use areas. Visitors should visit the park website at nps.gov/gate while planning their visit to get the latest information on accessibility and available services.

National Park Service officials have determined that by using Federal Land and Recreation Enhancement funds to immediately bring back park maintenance crews, Gateway will be able to continue accessibility for visitors while ensuring health and safety.

Outdoor areas of the park will remain accessible. All facilities will remain closed, including visitor centers.

“We greatly appreciate the efforts of local residents and groups who have taken it upon themselves to collect garbage and organize clean-ups at the three Gateway locations (Staten Island, Jamaica Bay, Sandy Hook, N.J.),” said superintendent Jen Nersesian. “Their community spirit and love for the natural, historic, and recreation areas of Gateway came through for the park.”
