Over the last century, artists have had an enduring connection with national parks. Their paintings and photographic records exposed these natural wonders to people around the world. Today, national parks continue to inspire artists of all disciplines to create art that excites millions of people about national parks and builds awareness and fosters stewardship of these beautiful public lands and historic sites.

George Washington Birthplace's Artist-in-Residence program offers artists an opportunity to work and create in this historical and natural enviroment. Artists-in-Residence use their talent and skill to offer unique ways for the public to connect with the site.

Artist-in-Residence Program Details:

The George Washington Birthplace National Monument's Artist-in-Residence program is a non-residential program so we are unable to provide housing to artists. Selected artists will be provided with a dedicated studio space in the Memorial Area of the park in which to work.

Expectations of Artists

Throughout the duration of their residency, artists will work with their medium of choice in the studio or in the park for a minimum of 50 hours in 2024. By the end of their residency, they will work with park staff to create an art exhibition, program, or performance of their work. The park may be able to supply some of the materials needed for the work.
