Hike to the Cliff Dwellings

To hike to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, start by driving through the scenic Gila National Forest. There are two primary routes to reach the monument, both offering beautiful, yet different, experiences:

  1. NM-15 Route:
This is the most direct route, a 44-mile drive from Silver City that takes about two hours. The road is narrow, winding, and climbs steeply through the mountains, offering dramatic views of the surrounding wilderness. However, due to its challenging nature, this route is not recommended for large vehicles, trailers, or those uncomfortable with steep, twisty roads.

  2. NM-35 Route:
For a slightly longer but less challenging drive, consider taking NM-35, also known as the Inner Loop. This route is about 65 miles from Silver City and takes approximately 2.5 hours. NM-35 is wider and has gentler curves, making it more suitable for larger vehicles or those preferring a more relaxed drive. The route takes you through the beautiful Mimbres Valley, with lush landscapes and picturesque views.

Upon arriving at the Gila Cliff Dwellings, start your hike at the trailhead next to the Bookstore. The main trail is a moderately strenous 1-mile loop that takes you through a stunning landscape of juniper, pine, and oak trees. The hike involves a moderate ascent, gaining about 180 feet in elevation as you approach the cliff dwellings. The path is well-maintained but includes stone steps and uneven terrain, so sturdy footwear is essential.

As you climb, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Gila Wilderness, and you might spot wildlife such as mule deer or various bird species. The trail leads you to the cliff dwellings, a series of natural caves set in a cliff face 180 feet above the canyon floor, where you can explore the ancient rooms built by the Mogollon people over 700 years ago.

Average Hiking Time: The hike takes about an hour to an hour and a half, including time to explore the dwellings. However, you may want to spend extra time enjoying the views and the cultural significance of the site.

Hours of Operation: The Gila Cliff Dwellings are open to the public from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily, with the last visitors allowed on the trail at 4:00 PM. The Visitor Center is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Summer Tips (June - August):

  • Heat Precautions: Summer temperatures can be high, often exceeding 90°F (32°C). Hike early in the morning to avoid the midday heat, and carry plenty of water—at least one liter per person.
  • Sun Protection: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect against the strong New Mexico sun.
  • Monsoon Season: Be aware of the monsoon season (July and August), when afternoon thunderstorms are common. Check weather forecasts, and be prepared for sudden downpours or flash flooding.

Winter Tips (December - February):

  • Cold Weather Gear: Winter temperatures can drop below freezing, especially in the mornings and evenings. Dress in layers, including a warm jacket, gloves, and a hat, as the canyon can be chilly even during the day.
  • Snow and Ice: Snowfall is possible in the winter months, and the trail can become icy. Make sure to wear hiking boots with good traction, and consider using trekking poles for stability on slippery sections.
  • Shorter Days: Days are shorter in winter, so plan your hike to finish well before sunset, which occurs early in the afternoon. Be aware that the last entry to the trail is at 4:00 PM.

General Tips:

  • Stay Hydrated: Regardless of the season, carry and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Weather Changes: Weather in the mountains can change rapidly, so always check the forecast and be prepared for varying conditions.
  • Respect the Site: Remember that the cliff dwellings are a protected archaeological site. Please do not touch or disturb any structures or artifacts.
  • No Pets Allowed: No pets are allowed on the Cliff Dwelling trail, however we offer kennels free of charge at the trailhead, and your furry companions are allowed on the surronding Forest Service trails.

By preparing accordingly for the season, you'll have a safe and enjoyable journey to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, experiencing both the natural beauty and the rich history of this unique site.
