GIS Program

The GIS Branch is organized under the NPS Chief Information Officer,National Information Systems Center, WASO. The office is managed by Joe Gregson and maintains two staff as well as CPSU support. David Duran provides system administration and internet map server support and expertise. Tim Smith is the NPS GPS coordinator and provides GPS advise, data dictionary standards and templates, integration support, and GPS training. North Carolina State University provides national GIS and remote sensing support, planning, training, and manages the GIS Clearinghouse.

A GIS Committee and Charter was recently formalized to:

  • Review and promote the implementation of NPS information and application systems to promote geographic data as a framework for the broadest integration of databases and systems.
  • Facilitate the sharing of and open access to NPS data. Provide support and leadership in the development of data, metadata and standards.
  • Provide recommendations to the NPS CIO on the long-term strategies and priorities for GIS program direction.
  • Identify GIS training needs, and plan or make recommendations for the development and presentation of training in cooperation with other groups or agencies.
  • Serve as the focal point for integrating park, regional, and national perspectives in the development of NPS GIS goals, objectives, and a strategic plan.
  • Improve communications between the national, regional, and park efforts, and increase understanding of decisions that affect program direction, priorities, and allocation of resources.
