Map Legend

The Legend in the Park Atlas is part of the interactive nature of this site. You can turn on and off layers to compose the map you would like to view. To turn on a layer scroll down the list using the slider bar. When you see a layer that is not currently being displayed click the box or circle to the left of the entry. Then click on the "Refresh" button located at the top and bottom of the Legend area. This will re-display the map in the Main Map area.
To turn off a layer simply "uncheck" the layer and click the "Refresh Map" button.
NOTE: The difference between the boxes and circles is that you can display one or more layers beginning with a box. But, only display one layer per view beginning with a circle.

Their are four type of data displayed in the main map area: 1) points, 2) lines, 3) polygons, and 4) raster.

Points - are locations on the map that represent some feature and are displayed as symbols (i.e., Campsites and Cabins). Note: a point when "zoomed-in" what was view as a point may be represented as a polygon, such as a building (see polygon below).

Line - are displayed as line symbols (i.e., the lightning bolts in the legend). Also, on the map there may be additional symbols to further help identify the feature (e.g., Highway 89 Hwy 89 symbol).

Polygon - are features like lakes, park boundaries, etc. (i.e., features with area) and displayed filled with a color and/or pattern. In some cases like the National Park Boundary the border is a different color than the interior and the fill color may be transparent to allow you to see detail under, or within, the boundary of the polygon.

Polygon with value ranges - These are very similar to the polygons above. But, there is a range to the values displayed for that single type of data. The example to the left shows "average annual snowfall" in inches.

Raster - Raster data are displayed as back-drops. These can only be viewed one theme per map. As an example if you were looking at Yellowstone and displayed "Snowfall" on the "Relief Imagery".
