The Pacific Northwest is experiencing record hot weather that has moved into Glacier National Park as well. Throughout the next week we anticipate temperatures to approach or surpass 100 degrees F. Visitors to the park will need to plan carefully for outdoor activities during this time.

Hike Smart

  • Plan on hiking as early in the day as possible and avoid hiking in afternoon and early evening. This time of year the sun does not set until after 9:30 pm. A evening hike might be a cooler option, just be sure to be off the trail before dark. Ask at a visitor center if the trail you plan to hike has shade or is out in the open the majority of the way.
  • Bring extra water. Many trails do not have reliable water sources along the route. Any surface water in the park needs to be filtered or treated. Again, stop at a visitor center and ask about water along the trail you intend to hike.
  • You are going to need a lot of protection from the sun. Make sure you have a strong sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and clothes that are light and breathable. Check your gear before you head out. Make sure to bring all the essentials. Bear spray is a must on any park trail.
  • Higher elevations in the park tend to be cooler, but they are generally open and have little shade.
  • Cool mountain streams may look inviting, but take extra caution in and around streams and lakes. Drowning is one of the major causes of death and injury in the park.
  • Continually check on yourself and your hiking companions to assess their condition. Heat related illnesses are very dangerous.
