Named in 1874 by W.H. Dall, USC&GC, for Jean Francois de Galaup de la Persouse, a French Navigator who explored the coast in this area in 1786. La Persouse was a member of the French Navy.
". . . We were members of a U.S. Geological Survey party investigating the geology of a layered gabbro body which makes up Mount La Perouse and Mount Crillon. One critical section of this gabbro body was exposed near the summit of Mount La Perouse, which meant that if we were to be thorough in our investigation we would have to climb the mountain.”
