By the 1890 the leaders in the Presidio of San francisco realized that the existing Enlisted Barracks were overcrowded and something had to be done. In 1892 still nothing had changed but it was becoming more apparent the size and importance of the Presdio in conjunction with the proximity to a large city which brought daily visitors and officers from foreign countries that new barracks of ample size and modern building materials should be built. The idea was finally authorized a year later. Between 1895 and 1897, "Infantry row", or the Montgomery Street Barracks we know today where built and had begun being used.
From Erwin N. Thompson, Defender of the Gate: The Presidio of San Francisco, A History from 1846 to 1995, (Golden Gate National Recreation Area, California, National Park Service, 1995).

The Park Archives and Records Center has a few Panoramic photos of regiments outside of these barracks, and even fewer names of the soldiers in them. If you see anyone you know let Archives know.
