Golden Spike National Historical Park to Host Steam Locomotive Demonstrations December 29, 30, and 31

Promontory Summit, UT - Golden Spike National Historical Park invites the public to join us December 29^th, 30^th, and 31^st for daily steam locomotive demonstrations.

For 2020, the Union Pacific Locomotive 119 will run throughout the day along approximately one mile of the historic transcontinental railroad grade where visitors will have the opportunity smell, hear, see and feel the power of this historic machine. Due to the ongoing pandemic, activities normally associated with the Winter Steam Festival will be limited compared to prior years. The park store will be open and there will be limited access to the visitor center exhibits consistent with CDC guidelines.

To comply with Federal, state and local COVID-19 public health directives and manage crowding at the event, a timed ticket will be required for entry to the Last Spike Site and locomotive demonstration. Tickets will be available December 22 at 8:00 AM MT (10:00 AM ET) on Recreation.gov (https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/facility/10086684). Entrance fees will be waived, however, there is a $1.00 reservation fee for each ticket. The Big Fill Hiking Trail, Big Fill Overlook and East Auto Tour will also be open, weather permitting. No ticket is required to visit these areas of the park.

“We’re excited to be able to give visitors the opportunity to see a steam locomotive during the cold winter months when the steam powering them is much more visible,” said Superintendent Brandon Flint, “I am hopeful that visitors can help us keep everyone safe by maintaining proper distancing and wearing a face covering as they enjoy their day at the park.”Visitors should dress warmly and be prepared for winter weather conditions. The State of Utah has issued a Public Health Order requiring the use of face coverings and maintaining a distance of 6 feet from other people who do not live with you. To provide a safe experience, visitors must adhere to the Public Health Order while attending this event. For visitors not able to make it to the winter locomotive demonstrations most areas of the park are open year-round. Updated information on winter hours for the visitor center, park store and engine house can be found on the park’s website or by contacting the park directly.

Activities are subject to change based on weather conditions and mechanical operations. Golden Spike National Historical Park is located 32 miles west of Brigham City via state highways 13 and 83.
