Grand Canyon, Ariz. – Today at 2:12 p.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call from a park employee about a 2 car motor vehicle accident on South Entrance Road, approximately 3 miles north of the park's South Entrance Station. A 24-year old female rear passenger in a sedan suffered fatal injuries. The driver and front seat passenger of the sedan suffered non-critical injuries and were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center. The driver and passenger of the second vehicle, a pick-up truck, were uninjured. A winter storm was producing sleet and snow prior to and during the motor vehicle accident and may have been a contributing factor to the incident. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner and an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death. No further information is available at this time. NPS |
