The Education Team at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is excited to announce the San Luis Valley Archaeological Expeditions! With partner sites, we will be hosting educational programming for local youth about the history of the valley and archaeology itself. These events can be attended as stand-alone activities, but we of course recommend families register for all three! Programming is geared toward youth ages 11-17, but family members are also welcome to attend. All you need to bring is a curious mind, a notebook, and a sack lunch! Friday, July 7: Rio Grande County Museum — What's the difference between a petroglyph and a pictograph? Learn about prehistoric rock art and paint some for yourself! Friday, July 14: Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center — Explore the many people who have called this valley their home, and learn how the Ute people used science, technology, engineering, and math long ago. Friday, August 4: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve — With park rangers as your guide, tour the museum archives, walk a historic mountain pass, and perform an experiment with ancient weapons. Please email a ranger or call 719-378-6347 for more information or to register. |
