Salt Flat, Texas - Guadalupe Mountains National Park will temporarily close Guadalupe Peak to backcountry camping from Sunday, December 20, 2020 until Monday, January 4, 2021. Due to exceptional drought, continued patterns of resource damage and illegal fire violations at Guadalupe Peak backcountry sites, all Guadalupe Peak sites will be closed to backcountry camping.
This action follows the park-wide fire restrictions enacted on November 18, 2020 to reduce fire risks within the park. This administrative action is issued by superintendent authority and in accordance with 36 CFR 1.5. The park issues this administrative order for the purposes of limiting damage to and maintaining critical park resources during a period of extreme fire danger. The effectiveness of this order will be reassessed on an ongoing basis and may be modified when conditions warrant.
