The rehabilitation of the north parkway aims to improve the driving experience, safety, and water drainage while retaining and reviving the historic beauty and significance of the parkway, including opening scenic views to Washington, D.C. On October 16, after hearing concerns from the community, the National Park Service (NPS) stopped tree removal work associated with the vista improvement part of the project. The NPS will initiate a full review through the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and an Environmental Assessment (EA) under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This will include opportunities for public engagement, ensuring transparency and community involvement. The NPS will not remove trees to restore vistas before we consider the results of the review and public engagement process.
