MCLEAN, Va. —Starting Friday, May 31, the National Park Service (NPS) will close the I-495 exit ramp from the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) toward Maryland. This closure is for drainage installation and rehabilitation work. The ramp will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 3. If needed, the ramp may also be closed the following weekend, starting Friday, June 7, depending on the weather.During the closure, all northbound GWMP traffic must exit at Route 123 and follow detour signs to reach I-495.
Southbound GWMP will remain open.
The ramp closure schedule and work are weather permitting and subject to change.
Background:
The rehabilitation of the northern section of the parkway was announced by the Department of the Interior on December 7, 2021. In partnership with the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration awarded a $161 million contract to rehabilitate this section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The project will improve the driving experience, safety and water drainage while retaining and reviving the historic beauty and significance of the parkway – including opening scenic views to Washington, D.C.
