Alexander Hamilton wrote many letters to Eliza and his other contacts about creating gardens and agricultural fields that surround his new country home. Many of those letters have been recovered, and the gardens that surround the home today are faithful reconstructions from these documents.

Today, The Grange has many gardens that surround, it including a front circular garden that was recreated based off of a sketch drawn by Alexander Hamilton himself. Above is a map of the gardens around Hamilton Grange National Memorial that can be used along with the pictures, descriptions, and bloom times below to locate plants and flowers around the site. This page will be updated throughout the year to highlight the different plants and flowers in bloom so check back often!

 

Modern-Day Garden Collection:

 

Hyacinths

Hyacinths

White, pink and purple hyacinths bloom in the two front gardens during the spring. Alexander Hamilton asked his gardener to plant hyacinths in the main circular garden at the Grange.

 

Tulips

Tulips

Tulips of varying types and colors including yellow, white, pink, orange and red bloom in all of the gardens surrounding the Grange during the spring. Alexander Hamilton asked his gardener to plant tulips in the main circular garden at the Grange. Today there are over 40 varieties of Tulips planted throughout all of the gardens.

 

Daffodils

Daffodils

Daffodils of varying types and colors including white, yellow and orange bloom in all of the gardens surrounding the Grange in the spring. Double Daffodils, Large Cupped Daffodils, Trumpet Daffodils, and Miniature Daffodils (shown in the photograph) are planted in all of the gardens.

 

Viola Sororia Violet

Violets

Viola Sororia is a native variety of the Common Blue Violet that has mostly white petals with a blue-purple coloration toward the center of the petals. The Viola Sororia variation can be found in yards throughout the east coast.

 

Alba Plena Camellia, also known as a 'Winter Camellia'

Winter Camellia

Alba Plena Camellia Japonica, also known as a Winter Camellia, blooms on the corner of the east front garden from later winter to the spring. Each blooming flower consists of over 100 petals.

 

Virginia Bluebells

Virgina Bluebells

Virginia Bluebells bloom in the back garden in the spring. Virginia Bluebells are native to eastern North America and can grow in the wild as well as in gardens.
