Field Trip Information for Teachers

We are looking forward to spending a fun and educational day with you and your students in Haleakalā National Park’s wonderful outdoor classroom. Carefully review the following material.

Student and Chaperone Requirements

The size limit (per day) is 50 students. Please assign the chaperones using guidelines below.

  • K - 2nd grade = 1 adult for every 3 students (ex: 22 students would require 8 adults)
  • 3rd - 5th grade = 1 adult for every 5 students (ex: 22 students would require 5 adults)
  • 6th grade & up = 1 adult for every 10 students (ex: 22 students would require 3 adults)
Please share with the chaperones prior to their arrival. Teachers and chaperones are responsible for students’ behavior. Rangers are provided as program facilitators and are not responsible for discipline of students. Divide the students into 2 groups and distribute chaperones.

School Regulations

Teachers are responsible for making sure that all school regulations (regarding parental permission slips, etc.) are followed.

Photography

Designating one adult as the class photographer for the day is a great alternative to letting each student take pictures (which can be distracting). Share pictures with the class!

Provide guidance to students for lunch and clean-up

Everyone looks forward to lunch after an exciting morning. Having lunches marked or organized for easy distribution will decrease the time spent passing things out and increase the time for learning. Help students clean up.

Pre-Visit Activities

Completing these activities before the field trip will build a foundation for the in-park lesson and make for a more meaningful educational experience for your students at the park.

Facilities

You will have access to picnic tables, restrooms, and potable water.

Safety

  • Nametags: Provide nametags for all participants, including adults. A single piece of masking tape with their first name works well. Please have students wear nametags on outermost layer of clothing.

  • Preparedness: Be sure all participants are prepared for the unpredictable weather conditions including cold temperatures, high winds, and/or rain. Please share ‘Parent & Student Information’ with your students.

  • Park Rules: Review the 7 Leave No Trace principals and park rules with chaperones and students before arriving at the park. The park visit involves lots of walking outdoors over uneven, steep terrain. Closed toed shoes are mandatory. Please let us know in advance if there are students that need special accommodations.

  • Warnings: Due to the high elevation, altitude sickness can be a problem. Children with asthma, heart, or respiratory conditions should check with their doctor before coming on the field trip.

Post Visit Activities

The post visit activities are designed to reinforce and build upon the knowledge gained from the pre-visit and in-park activities.
