Kula, Maui —The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park has now reopened. The road beyond Haleakalā Visitor Center at 9,740 feet extending up to the Puʻuʻulaʻula (Red Hill) at 10,023 remains closed to vehicle traffic due to icy roadways.

There is very little snow accumulation at the summit of Haleakalā and it is predominantly ice. Ice and snow are sporadic above 9,000 feet and melting. The National Park Service reminds visitors to stay on designated paths and trails. Going off trail may damage or kill fragile plant life hidden underneath the snow like the ʻahinahina (Haleakalā silverswords, Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp macrocephalum).

While enjoying the park, remember to #RecreateResponsibly by staying at least six feet away from other people and to wear a face mask when you are near others. Drivers should be prepared for slippery conditions and periodic ice on roadways.

The Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park remains open. Check www.nps.gov/hale for updates.
