September 2024 events & updates at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park

HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi – Change is on the horizon at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park this month. The upcoming renovation of Kīlauea Visitor Center means fewer monthly events, but join us outside for ranger programs, hula, the fee-free National Public Lands Day, and in Kahuku.

All events are free, but park entrance fees apply except on National Park Lands Day. Programs are subject to change or cancellation without notice. Check the park calendar for more information.

Kahuku Agricultural Field System Community Day. Discover two pre-contact agricultural field system excavation sites in Kahuku. This guided hike will be led by Janae Garcia with the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Cultural Resources program. Reservations are required and limited to the first 25 to register. Contact e-mail us for more information and to reserve your spot. 
When: Sunday, September 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 
Where: Kahuku Unit Visitor Contact Station. The Kahuku entrance is located in Kaʻū near the 70.5 mile marker off Highway 11. 

Kīlauea Visitor Center Renovation Update. Starting as soon as this fall, Kīlauea Visitor Center (KVC), restrooms, and most adjacent parking will close for construction. After Dark in the Park, Nā Leo Manu and other park programs will be suspended once KVC closes. During the closure, the interior of KVC will be rehabilitated, new exhibits will be installed, the restrooms will be rebuilt and the lānai will be replaced by an expanded covered hālau (pavilion). Limited visitor services and the Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association store will relocate 1.2 miles west to a temporary visitor contact station adjacent to the historic ball field near Kilauea Military Camp. Volcano House and the Volcano Art Center Gallery will remain open.  
When: KVC closure schedule to be determined after the contract is awarded on or around September 30.

What is Going on with Disaster Recovery? Multiple projects, including the addition of an administrative lane at the entrance, the installation of a roundabout on Crater Rim Drive East, improvements to infrastructure, construction of the new USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory field station, and the removal of buildings from Uēkahuna, continue. Fee-Free Day for National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the U.S. Come help us ensure the future of the Hawaiian rainforest and volunteer to remove invasive, non-native plants that prevent native plants from growing in the park. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, rain gear, day pack, snack and water. Gloves and tools are provided. Under 18? Parental or guardian accompaniment or written consent is required. No advance registration is required, but space is limited to the first 25 participants. Contact field@hawaii.edu ahead of time. Park entrance is free, and NPLD volunteers will receive a pass to return and enjoy the park fee-free on another day of their choosing.  
When: Saturday, September 28, 8:45 a.m. to noon. Meet project leaders Paul and Jane Field at Kīlauea Visitor Center lānai.

Ranger-Guided Programs at Kīlauea Summit. Did you know that Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park offers free guided programs nearly every day? Experience Life on the Edge, Into the Volcano and other ranger treks by checking the park calendar for dates, times and descriptions. 
When: Almost daily

Volcano Art Center Hula Arts at Kīlauea Performances
The Volcano Art Center (VAC) presents authentic hula kāhiko performances through its ongoing Hula Arts at Kīlauea program. Performances occur the second Saturday of each month through 2024 and are sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and/or Hawai‘i Tourism Authority. Hālau Kou Lima Nani E, under the direction of Iwalani Kalima, performs this month. Bring sun/rain gear and a sitting mat. Free, but park entrance fees apply. When: September 14 at 10:30 a.m. Arrive early, parking is limited at the visitor center. Additional parking available at Kūkamāhuākea (Steam Vents). 
Where: Kahua Hula (hula platform) near the Volcano Art Center Gallery and Kīlauea Visitor Center. 

Volunteer Opportunities
