Sophomore year was the time to apply oneself in a competitive selection process. FDR was disappointed to learn that he was not among those accepted to the prestigious Porcellian club. Instead, he became a member of the Fly Club, the Hasty Pudding Club, the Memorial Society,The Social Service Society, the St. Paul's Society, the Political Club, the Yacht Club, and the Signet Society represented by this medal. The Signet was established in 1870 by a group of undergraduates dissatisfied with the fraternities and other social clubs at Harvard. Founded as a arts and letters society, members were among those with distinguished academci achievement and gathered on Friday evenings "for a cup of chocolate and an hour or two of conversation." |
