BEATRICE, Neb. – Homestead National Historical Park is proud to share its mini-documentary production entitled Homestead Roots Deep in the South on February 4, 2024, at 2PM at the park’s Education Center.
This 24-minute production introduces two families from Maryland that seek to share their family history with a younger generation. Experience as they go on a genealogical journey back in time utilizing clues passed down through the generations. These clues ultimately connect to family members who took part in the Homestead Act of 1862 in the deep South.
Race was not recorded on homestead land entry case files. It is not yet widely known how many black homesteaders never left the South and became landowners via the Homestead Act. Discoveries are yet to be made as these descendants uncover their familial bridges from enslavement to landownership through the Homestead Act of 1862.
Join Park Guide Jessica Korgie after the premiere for a question-and-answer session about this production and how you can apply the information shared to your genealogical research.
