Beatrice, Nebraska – On Sunday, January 19, at 2:00 p.m., Homestead National Monument of America will host its first of three square dancing workshops being held at the Education Center. These workshops are free to participate in and are being sponsored by the Friends of Homestead. Square dancing is unique in that the caller walks you through the steps so it is much easier to pick up then other traditional forms of dancing that require routine memorization. Lanny Weaklend, an experienced caller from Omaha will teach guests the fundamentals of square dancing and will host lively session.
Sessions will be held three consecutive Sundays in a row. Workshops are self-contained so you can get all needed instruction by attending any of the three events, or all of the three events. These events are open to all ages and skill levels. These Superintendent Mark Engler stated that “Square Dancing served as a social activity amongst neighbors in rural homesteading communities. Square dancing still has the potential to connect people through fun activity.”
All three events will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Homestead National Monument of America’s Heritage Center.
