· These birds use their beaks to open seeds, catch flies, spear beetles and to crack open acorns

· One of the most numerous birds in North America

· Can hop backwards when foraging (looking for food sources) – known as “double scratch”

· During breeding season, males aggressively defend their
territories, chasing other males out of their territory and
attacking nest predators

· Males have multiple mates
