INDEPENDENCE, MO— The National Park Service , the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, and the City of Grandview are pleased to announce that a unit of the 399th Army Band, based out of Fort Leonard Wood, will perform on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at 1:00PM. This concert will take place at the Truman Farm, 12301 Blue Ridge Boulevard Ext, Grandview, Missouri, 64030. The event is free and open to all.In World War I, Harry S Truman commanded a group of men in Battery D, 129th Field Artillery. At the time that Captain Truman re-enlisted in the United States Army, he was working on his family’s farm in Grandview, Missouri. Truman, like so many soldiers, put their lives in America on hold to fight for what they held dear. Battery D remained a family in itself, eventually playing a role in Truman’s later life, from attending President Truman’s inauguration in 1949 to saluting Truman at his funeral in 1972.The 399th Army Band will perform selections that pay tribute to Captain Truman, those he commanded, and all who served in World War I up to today. Those who have ancestors who served in the 129th Field Artillery or World War I are invited to bring a photograph of their loved one, so they can be honored in a special way.
Persons attending are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket, water, and bug repellant as necessary. There will be onsite help with parking. Tours of the Truman Farm will run as normal that day, except during the performance. All tours are first come, first served. In case of adverse weather, updates will be made on the park website, including address of an alternate location. The National Park Service thanks the National Archives, the City of Grandview, and the 399th Army Band for making this event possible.
