Explore the trails of Indiana Dunes National Park and join in a photo contest and family Trash Trekkers scavenger hunt in honor of National Trails Day. This is an annual event hosted by the American Hiking Society, which celebrates not only national scenic and historic trails, but all trails on public lands. The National Park Service and the American Hiking Society invite everyone who enjoys spending time outside to join the nationwide efforts by pledging to improve a trail on National Trails Day.

To participate, stop by the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center on Saturday, June 4 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to pick up trash bags and scavenger hunt sheets. Then, hit the trail and begin the search for different types of wildlife and trash. The park fee will be waived for all scavenger hunt participants; temporary volunteer fee waivers will be issued at the Visitor Center as scavenger hunt sheets are distributed. The waivers will be valid only on National Trails Day. The Visitor Center is located at 1215 N State Road 49 in Porter, Indiana. Remember to dress appropriately; wear comfortable outdoor clothing and bring sunscreen, bug spray and water.

Don’t forget to take pictures of the trail along the way. Submit up to three photos of your favorite trail to The Park Connection office at parkconnection@gmail.com. The winning trail photo will be selected and featured on the Indiana Dunes National Park Facebook page. Photo contest entry is not limited to scavenger hunt participants. The only submission requirement is that the photo be taken on any Indiana Dunes National Park trail on National Trails Day.
