NPS Scientists come to Isle Royale to research wildlife.Animals often leave clues, like tracks or scat, that tell us more about them. Can you use these clues to identify some of the species that live on Isle Royale?

It was a wolf! There are multiple wolf packs roaming Isle Royale.

Yellow-bellied sapsuckers leave marks like this after searching for bugs and sap inside trees!

River otters love to slide around on their bellies in the snow! In the summer, you can find them swimming or laying in the sun.

It was a moose! Moose eat around 40 pounds of leaves a day to maintaine their figure of 1,000 pounds.

It was a beaver! Beavers use the branches of the trees they chew down to make their dams.

This was left behind by a red fox! Red foxes are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. This fox ate a lot of berries.

It was a spittlebug! Spittlebugs are commonly found on Isle Royale. Their bubbly, spit-like homes keep them warm and safe while they are growing in the spring.
