It’s Presidential Campaign Season

Every four years America elects a President and Vice-President. And every four years, we at James A. Garfield NHS celebrate the unique and groundbreaking 1880 presidential campaign, giving visitors new ways to experience the first front porch campaign in the place where it happened. If you visit us in Mentor, Ohio this fall, you will be able to walk the grounds and listen to a new campaign-focused tour on your cell phone. But this year many of our campaign activities have, necessarily moved on-line. So look for a new, virtual exhibit highlighting some of the stories of the campaign in the places where they happened. Also new this fall, A Fickle Current, a podcast series about James Garfield’s life in politics, will debut on our web site. Look for both of these at the beginning of September, when campaign season starts to heat up! Find the links to all of these upcoming projects on our website at www.nps.gov/jaga for more info!

“Ideas Outlive Men”

James A. Garfield and the Civil War

The January, 1862 Battle of Middle Creek, Kentucky catapulted James A. Garfield to regional and national fame. Even before he donned a soldier’s uniform, though, he had strong convictions and opinions about the events which led to the Civil War. Garfield, like every surviving soldier, continued to have those strong feelings and close ties to his fellow veterans after they mustered out. Learn more about Garfield’s private and public sentiments about the war and the cause for which millions fought.
Join Ranger Alan Gephardt virtually on Wednesday, August 12, at 12 p.m. as part of the Mentor Public Library and James A. Garfield NHS series Leaders and Legacies of the Civil War Era.
