JAMESTOWN, VIRGINIA - Sunday, July 28, 2019. On Tuesday, July 30, 2019, Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne at Jamestown Island will be closed from 5 am to 1 pm, programming begins at 2 pm for both sites. Please read the latest press release about the road closures, ferry closures, parking, and changes to operating hours. Reminder to visitors to plan ahead and be aware of increased traffic in the area. Below you will find the programming and events at each location after the closures end along with parking and shuttle information. 

 

Private Morning and Afternoon Sessions:

Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne at Jamestown Island will be closed from 5 am to 2 pm to the public, but will offer a simulcast live of the 400th Anniversary Joint Commemorative Session of the Virginia General Assembly on the Virginia General Assembly website. Two sessions will be shown: a morning ceremony session at 7:30 am and an afternoon commemorative session at 10 am.

Jamestown Settlement, a living-history museum of 17th-century Virginia, will be open at 2 pm to 6 pm on July 30. Visitors can enjoy immersive films and gallery exhibits to learn about the stories of people and events in 17th-century Jamestown, including refreshed exhibits that incorporate new historical research and technology presented in innovative ways and highlight 1619 historical events, including the first legislative assembly in the New World, the first recorded Africans in Virginia and the influx of English women to the Virginia colony. Special exhibits include the "The Proceedings of the First General Assembly," original minutes penned July 30, 1619, on loan from The National Archives, UK, and a special 2019 exhibition,“TENACITY: Women in Jamestown and Early Virginia.”

 

Outdoors, Jamestown Settlement visitors can take an active role in living history alongside costumed interpreters with a range of historical presentations and enhanced programming in outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, 1607 ships and 1610-14 fort. As part of "Origins of American Democracy" programming through August 1st, visitors can take part in hands-on activities, including joining in a drill to defend the colony at the re-created James Fort, discussing the “Laws Divine Moral and Martial” in the governor’s house, learning about the rule of law from inside the church and head to the re-created village to explore Powhatan Indian government.
 

Historic Jamestowne, part of Colonial National Historical Park:

First Assembly Walking Tour
2 pm - 3 pm
Location: Begins at the Tercentennial Monument
Join a Jamestown Rediscovery educator to learn more about the struggle toward good government, from the chaos of the early fort period to the long-lasting effects of democracy.

First Africans Walking Tour
3 pm - 4 pm
Location: Begins at the Tercentennial Monument
Take a walking tour of New Towne focusing on the arrival of the first Africans to Jamestown in 1619 and the legacies that have endured over 400 years.

Angela’s Story
4 pm - 5 pm
Location: The Angela Site
Listen as Angela, one of the first Africans who lived on Jamestown Island, recalls her former home in Angola, her capture, and her new life in Virginia.

 

American Evolution Fanfare to Democracy Concert July 30, 2019 at 8 pm:

Guests are invited to join a one-time experience in honor of the 400th anniversary of American democracy. The Richmond Symphony will feature works that evoke the spirit of American democracy. The event is free and open to the public, and will be held at Historic Jamestowne at Jamestown Island.

 

Guest Details:

No self-drive will be permitted to Jamestown Island for the American Evolution Fanfare to Democracy Concert. Complimentary shuttle buses will transport concert attendees starting at 5 pm from two designated parking lots located at Jamestown Settlement (2110 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185) and the James River Association (also referred to as Neck-o-Land) satellite parking lot (1335 Colonial Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23185.) Security screening and bag policy are in effect for Fanfare to Democracy concert for the safety of all visitors. Security checks will take place at the designated parking lots before getting onto the shuttles. James River Association (also referred to as Neck-o-Land)

Shuttle from James River Association (also referred to as Neck-o-Land) to Jamestown Island from 1 PM - 10 pm every 10 minutes. No self-drive or parking access will be permitted to Historic Jamestowne at Jamestown Island.


Jamestown Settlement 

2110 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185
Shuttle from Jamestown Settlement will bring visitors to Jamestown Island between 5 pm to 10 pm every 5 minutes. Jamestown Settlement will be open to the public from 2 pm to 6 pm. Self-drive and public parking at Jamestown Settlement will be from 2 pm to 10 pm.

 

Accessibility

Event accessibility accommodations will be available on the shuttle buses and on Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement. For additional accessibility needs, please call American Evolution at 757-253-4219.

Historic Jamestowne, which is jointly administered by the National Park Service and Jamestown Rediscovery, preserves the original site of the first successful English settlement in North America. Entrance to the site is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm The Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center is open from 9 am - 5 pm, and the grounds remain open until dusk. General admission is $20.00 per adult (which includes both Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield for seven consecutive days). Children 15 & under are free.
