Road Conditions

When traveling through the Black Hills, visitors are encouraged to dial 511 for current road conditions. Simply follow the prompts for South Dakota highways, and enter Highway 16 for the road conditions near the monument. For further guidance, visitors can also check online at South Dakota 511 for additional updates and weather information.

Weather conditions in western South Dakota can change drastically in a matter of minutes. Strong thunderstorms are common during the afternoon hours in May, June, and early July. Hot temperatures and dry conditions often occur in July, August, and early September. During the off-season, travelers should plan ahead when visiting the area due to winter storms.

The main phone line connects visitors with staff at the visitor center. Throughout the year, the phone line is monitored by staff on a daily basis, excluding holidays and days with limited visitor services. Please be advised that after-hours messages are not taken on the system; visitors are encouraged to call the visitor center during normal operations and speak with a park ranger for assistance.
