To commemorate National Parks Week (April 22-29, 2007), Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will sponsor a Junior Ranger Day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at the Historic Old Courthouse and the Gateway Arch.
Young people 5-18 years old can earn Junior Ranger badges, certificates and lapel pins. Special activities at the Historic Old Courthouse will include a table top display area featuring building materials (9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Children may use the materials to learn about various architectural features used both past and present. Materials are on loan from the Landmarks Association. A representative from the Landmarks Association will also be on hand at the Historic Old Courthouse to talk about the materials and their use. Activities at the Gateway Arch will feature a touch table with items related to the current large screen film Alaska: Spirit of the Wild. There will also be a special bingo scavenger hunt in connection with the Lewis and Clark exhibit that will allow young people to explore the displays on their own and locate items of importance in the story of the explorers.
Junior Ranger Day is a national effort to encourage families to use the National Parks for entertainment and education. The theme of National Parks Week is Your National Parks: Explore, Learn, and Protect.
Also available will be special Junior Ranger booklets, badges and certificates. For more information about National Parks Week or Junior Ranger Day, visit the park online at www.nps.gov/jeff.
The Museum of Westward Expansion and the Gateway Arch are open daily 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Historic Old Courthouse is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All ranger-led and special programs are FREE of charge.
