Path of the Flood Hike, Part I

Saturday, June 29 at 9:00 a.m.

The 7-mile hike begins at the South Abutment near the remains of the dam and continues to Mineral Point.

The hike will go through the towns of South Fork and Mineral Point. Participants will learn about those towns before and after the flood. A few of the additional topics include the Conemaugh Viaduct, telegraph messages, and people who played an active role in the events of May 31, 1889.

Participants will park in the lot near the South Abutment located on South Abutment Road off of Route 869. At the conclusion of the hike, a shuttle will bring hikers back to the parking lot. The hike covers moderately difficult terrain. Participants are encouraged to wear good walking shoes and bring plenty of water.

Path of the Flood Hike, Part II

Saturday, August 10 at 9:00 a.m.


The second half of the Path of the Flood hike starts in Mineral Point and ends at the Stone Bridge. The hike is approximately 7 miles in length over flat terrain. Visitors meet at the trailhead parking lot in Mineral Point off of Beech Hill Road. From there, participants will hike through various towns to learn about the Johnstown Flood from Mineral Point to the Stone Bridge. At the conclusion of the tour, a shuttle will bring hikers back to the parking lot. This hike is designed to begin where the Path of the Flood Hike, Part I ends, but participation in that hike is not necessary for Path of the Flood Hike, Part II.
