Searchers Looking for Hiker in Lost Palms Oasis Area

There is currently a search operation underway in the Lost Palms Oasis area of Joshua Tree National Park. Claire Nelson, a 36 year old, white female from New Zealand has been reported overdue. On Tuesday she informed a friend that she intended to hike to Lost Palms Oasis and would be back on Wednesday. She has not been in contact with anyone since.

Authorities were notified Friday morning, May 25th at approximately 10am. Nelson’s vehicle was found in the Lost Palms Oasis/Mastodon Peak trailhead parking area and searchers from the park and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department are currently involved in the search which includes helicopter support. Park officials advise hikers to always let someone know where you plan to hike and what time you plan to return. Always carry more water than you think you will need.
