The Covington Zone offers relatively easy access to some of the highest elevations ranging from 4,800 to ~5,600 feet. It features high peaks, scenic overlooks, and open valleys with some of the largest Joshua trees, pinyon pines, and junipers in the park. During the colder months, freezing temperatures are common.

Trails: Covington Crest (3 miles round-trip) and the California Hiking and Riding Trail. Quail Mountain (5813’), the highest point in the park, is a popular destination; however, there is no maintained trail to the summit and it requires off-trail navigation skills.

Bordering Zones: Black Rock, Juniper Flats, and Quail Wash.

Closest Backcountry Trailheads to Enter/Exit: Covington Flat (4800’), Black Rock (4,000'), and Juniper Flats (4,340’). To reach the Covington Flats trailhead, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
