Field trip programs to the monument are typically offered starting from mid-September. NPS rangers provide expert knowledge in creating interactive and informative experiences for students. They encourage active participation, asking students to observe, analyze, and draw connections between the concepts they learn in the classroom and real-world phenomena. Each field trip program consists of three parts (pre-site, on-site, post-site):

  1. Pre-site visit: A ranger visits your classroom with a 30-45 minute introductory lesson that includes safety and field trip expectations.
  2. On-site field trip: A ranger-led program at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The field trips are typically 2-3 hours long.
  3. Post-site classroom lesson: A conclusion activity that evaluates what students learned during the field trip.

Fall Field Trip Programs

Fall ranger-led field trips are typically offered starting mid-September through late October. Please submit your request 2 weeks before desired program date. Requests made less than 2 weeks of desired date will be considered but may not be able to be accommodated due to limited staffing.

  1. Habitats (K-5): Learn how habitats in KAWW provide animals with what they need to survive. Students will explore either a floodplain habitat or a forest habitat.
  2. Forest Ecology (3-8): Learn about the different parts of the forest and how it changes over time. Students will get the opportunity to collect data in areas demonstrating succession.

Winter Field Trip Programs

Winter ranger-led field trips will be offered during the winter starting in January through mid-March. Please submit your request 2 weeks before desired program date. Requests made less than 2 weeks of desired date will be considered but may not be able to be accommodated due to limited staffing.

  1. Winter Ecology Snowshoe Program (2-8): Have you ever wondered how plants and animals survive in a snow-covered landscape and freezing temperatures? Join us at the north section of Katahdin Woods and Waters NM to find out how! Learn about some of the amazing adaptations that plants and animals have for this challenging season while we explore the winter ecology of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument!
  • Equipment offered: Snowshoes are provided for up to 16 students and 3 adults. Schools are responsible for additional equipment needs. If the conditions don't meet snowshoe standards the program can be altered for winter hiking.
