Slavery and the Civil War

Both the years leading up to Abraham Lincoln's presidency and his years in office were primarily two things--the issue of slavery and then later, the United States Civil War. Long before Abraham Lincoln started his political career, the question of slavery had grown as a point of tension within the nation. The question of slavery became a major political issue, in which Abraham Lincoln, like many of the politicians of his time, had to take a stance on. After his election in 1860, the southern states seceeded and shortly after, with the attack on Fort Sumter, the American Civil War had begun.
