Description

Map of Precambrian land masses that sutured together to form Minnesota approximately 2.7 billion to 2.5 billion years ago. In southwestern Minnesota, the Great Lakes Tectonic Zone (GLTZ) marks the contact between the Wawa Subprovince and the Minnesota River Valley Subprovince. The Minnesota River Valley contains four distinct regions separated by faults and shear zones. From north to south, these are the Benson Block (BB), the Montevideo Block (MVB), the Morton Block (MB), and the Jeffers Block (JB). The Appleton Geophysical Lineament (AGL) and Yellow Medicine Shear Zone (YMSZ) separate the blocks. Yellow star indicates location of Pipestone National Monument.
