John Warren - Communications Specialist
Transcript
Hello, I'm John Warren. I work as a Communication Specialist for Region One of the National Park Service which has its offices in Philadelphia. And back in 1989, I got my first seasonal Park Ranger job at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which is in my home County.
The best parts of my childhood were spent at National Parks. Luckily, my family visited several of them. And I remember fondly walking down to the ruins at Mesa Verde, wide open spaces at Big Bend, Rocky Mountains, and the bicentennial trip that I suggested to go to Philadelphia to see Independence National Historical Park in 1976.
But it was at Carlsbad Caverns where the light bulb first went off for me. I was sitting with my mother in the amphitheater waiting for the bats to fly out of the cave. And the Ranger was giving his bats talk.
And so he was telling us all sorts of bat facts, how far they fly, and what they eat, and how much guano they produce. And I turned to my mother and I said, gee, how did he get this job?
Well, she didn't know. But years later, as an adult, I visited my hometown park, San Antonio Missions, and I saw a Park Ranger there and I asked him how he got this job. Well, he told me, and I followed those instructions, and here I am today.
