Primary Text Title: Camping at Courthouse Rock Take in this expansive scene and use the silhouettes ahead to help you imagine mules and muleteers moving through the landscape on the Old Spanish Trail in the mid-1800s. Travelers used this location, marked by Courthouse Rock on your left, as a campsite because it offered feed, fuel, protection, and water (at nearby Courthouse Spring). It was also a day’s trek from the Colorado River to the south and Floy Wash to the north, the average distance of travel being roughly 25 miles a day.

Secondary Text: Title: The Elk Mountain Mission In 1855, a handpicked group of 53 men chosen by Latter-day Saint leader Brigham Young traveled through here on the Old Spanish Trail and camped at Courthouse Rock. Those who scouted for them earlier in the fall of 1854 hired a Ute guide and interpreter named Sun Cloud. This venture to settle Spanish Valley (present-day Moab) is the earliest record we have of wheeled vehicles being used on this portion of the Old Spanish Trail.

There is a question below the secondary text: The question states: You are not the first to stay here. Native Americans and Old Spanish Trail traders camped here because of the water, fuel, and protection this place provided. Why did you choose this spot?
