Tom Medema - Associate Director for Interpretation, Education, & Volunteers

Youth & Young Adult Programs

Transcript

Hi. I'm Tom Medema, the associate director for interpretation education and volunteers for the National Park Service. And I'm here on the rooftop of my office building at main interior, where I get to look out at some of the national park sites that we protect and preserve, like the Washington Monument. The White House is right over there, the Jefferson Memorial, the MLK Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, so many other amazing places here in DC. But there's 424 of these places across the country.

I've been able to work in places like Yosemite National Park, Mount Rainier, Denali National Park, Cuyahoga Valley, and really doing the job of educating and inspiring people about why we have these national parks, why we preserve them, and how to give back, like volunteering. And so it's been an amazing 33-year career that started, again, as a volunteer and ended up here as an executive in Washington DC. But all about the same thing, protecting and preserving the amazing national parks all across this land that we all love and we all need.

Now, I have to admit, I don't spend most of my time up on the rooftop staring out at all the wonders of Washington Dc. Most of the time, I'm in a meeting room like this one or in my office. But wherever we are, whatever work we're doing, whether we're hiking trails in Yosemite, or working with wildlife in Denali, or meeting with community members at places like Cuyahoga Valley, or telling all of the diverse and incredible stories of our nation that are countless historic sites, all that work is incredibly important to protect and preserve the amazing places like national parks and historic sites that belong to all of us.

And no matter what job we do, we all have a role in protecting and preserving national parks through volunteering, through voting for parks, through supporting parks, visiting them, telling other people about them, and protecting this amazing heritage that belongs to all of us.
