40 for 40: Make a Connection

Fort Stanwix National Monument

Transcript

My name is Frank Barrows, I'm the Superintendent here at Fort Stanwix National Monument. Behind me is a statue of Peter Gansevoort who commanded the garrison here at Fort Stanwix during the Revolutionary War. Prior to coming here to Fort Stanwix, I was the Chief of Interpretation and Education at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, in Massachusetts. One of the stories we shared with the public was how Herman Melville went on a whaling voyage that inspired him to write the book "Moby Dick." And the Whalemen's Chapel that he visited before he went on that whaling voyage was right outside my office in New Bedford. Today, my office is right behind this statue in the Rome Historical Society building. And now I look down at Herman Melville's grandfather, Peter Gansevoort, every day. And now I look down at Herman Melville's grandfather, Peter Gansevoort, every day. And I invite you to come discover the connections you have to the fort.
