Casting of Frederick Douglass' Right Hand
1895
By Ulric Dunbar, Washington, DC
Plaster cast of Douglass' right hand made in 1895 after his death. In the fall of 1843, in Pendelton, Indiana, a mob broke out and Douglass' right hand was broken when he and an associate were beaten up by a gang of thugs. Because the bones were not properly set, Douglass's hand never regained its 'natural strength and exterity.
