Gerrit Smith was a wealthy New York abolition financier, politician, and humanitarian. He was an advocate for African Americans and offered over a 1000 acres of land in the Adirondack region of New York to free blacks and fugitive slaves of good character. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was his first cousin.
