Joshua Tree is on the eastern side of the Transverse Ranges, a long east-west mountain system that reaches from the Pacific Ocean to the eastern end of the park in the Eagle Mountains. The iconic rounded rock formations in the northern sections of the park consist of gneiss and several types of granite.
