Peak Registers

Peak Registers

1967 – 2019

Nearly 85% of Joshua Tree is designated wilderness. Hikers journeying to the top of some of the park’s highest remote peaks leave messages in informal peak registers. Most registers simply list names and comments about the weather, but some include encouraging messages to those who follow, or describe the experience of the hike. Peak registers are found in many U.S. wilderness areas. The most well-known historic registers in the western U.S. are the Sierra Club’s summit registers from the Sierra Nevada Range from the late 1800s.
