Improving roads around the National Mall

The National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration are repaving and restriping:


Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway between the Virginia Avenue NW and Parkway Drive NW.
  • Lane closures 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
  • Repaving work begins in September 2022.
Eastbound Independence Avenue SW between 23rd Street SW and 15th Street SW.
  • Lane closures 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
  • Repaving from Summer 2021 to Sept. 2022
17th Street between Independence Avenue SW and Constitution Avenue NW.
  • Lane closures 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
  • Repaving ongoing through September 2021.

The National Park Service is installing new traffic signal equipment and wiring as well as tactile paving at intersections across the National Mall. This improves accessibility and increases safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
