Jason Fallon named as new NPS Wildland Fire branch chief

Jason Fallon, a wildland fire evaluation specialist with the Department of the Interior Office of Wildland Fire, has been selected as the new branch chief for National Park Service (NPS) Wildland Fire.

He began his federal government career as a seasonal for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 2004 as a biological science technician after graduating the previous year with a bachelor’s degree in Biology from University of Wisconsin, River Falls. His work centered around prairie and oak savannah restoration as well as wildland fire management.

Jason’s began his first permanent position 2007, working for the NPS at Grand Canyon National Park on both the North and South Rims as an engine captain with a focus of managing fire across the landscape. Three years later, he moved to Colorado with USFWS Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, supporting refuges in Colorado and southern Wyoming, as a prescribed fire and fire use captain. In 2011, his career took him to Idaho Falls Bureau of Land Management as a prevention specialist working with Fire Adapted Communities, education programs, public information, outreach, and wildfire investigations.

Jason's next move came in 2012 to the Shasta-Trinity National Forest as a division chief where he focused on complex prescribed fire implementation to aid wildfire management. Four years later, Jason transitioned to the NPS Pacific West Region as the deputy fire management officer for Fuels, Fire Science, Ecology and Post-Fire where he supported parks in all phases of fire management. Jason comes back to NPS from his most recent position as wildland fire evaluation specialist with the Department of the Interior Office of Wildland Fire where he worked since 2019 with a number of interagency groups on a variety of topic areas such as workforce, fuels, preparedness, and IT applications.

Jason lives in Boise, Idaho with his wife and children. They enjoy spending much of their time outdoors and in the backcountry of Idaho and across the country.

He will begin his new position on June 4, 2023.
