THE BUILDINGS (continued)

B-32, Residence 4

In 1938, Hugh Miller, the assistant superintendent for Southwestern Monuments, reported an urgent need for an additional residence, residence 4, at Bandelier. He believed it should be a four-room house with a basement and central heating. [181] In 1941, the custodian's residence (figures 138-140) was under construction. The residence was completed on June 20, 1941, [182] and the oil furnace for central heating was installed later that summer. [183] It was the only residence with hardwood floors in the living room, dining room, and hall space.

Natural gas, probably installed in 1964, now heats the building. With a few exceptions, most of the work done on this building has consisted of routine maintenance. The exceptions were kitchen remodeling and installation of thermal pane windows in 1978 and the addition of a skylight and a foam roof in 1981. [184] Water, sewer, and gas service were replaced in 1983.

Lyle Bennett designed the building. R.J. Nicholson designed the heating system of 1964.
