PLATE 12. Vertical air view of the 7,900-foot vent of Mauna Loa eruption, May 1, 1942. The light-colored lava flow is moving toward the right, in the direction of Hilo. The flow was bombed in an effort to divert it. A bomb can be seen exploding close to the vent. (USAAF).

PLATE 13. Kilauea explosion cloud at 8:30 a.m. on May 22, 1924 from in front of the old Volcano House. The steam explosions, caused by ground water entering the hot vent, threw clouds of steam and ash to heights of more than 20,000 feet. (Tai Sing Loo).
