Driving George Washington Memorial Parkway from end to end provides a thorough lesson in twentieth-century scenic highway design. Beginning at Mount Vernon, one progresses from a narrow, winding, largely undivided concrete roadway to the wider traffic lanes, more generous curves, and continuous medians near National Airport. North of Washington, the motorist encounters the sweeping curves, widely separated road alignments, and soaring steel and concrete bridges of postwar parkway construction.
