NEW FEDERAL AREAS

SARATOGA PROGRAM APPROVED

A plan of suggested development and recommended boundaries for the proposed Saratoga National Historical Park has been approved by the Director. It recommends enlargement of the present state park area, rerouting of the federal highway outside the park and establishment of a series of historical tours.

CAPE HATTERAS MASTER PLAN BASE MAP COMPLETED

The master plan base map for the proposed Cape Hatteras National Seashore has been completed by the Resident Landscape Architect and distribution of prints will be made to senior Regional Technicians for suggestions before preparation of the final master plan.

FURTHER STUDY SUGGESTED TO DETERMINE FORT BOONESBOROUGH SITE

Assistant Historian Charles W. Porter has inspected the site of Fort Boonesborough, one of the sites proposed for inclusion in the projected Pioneer National Monument in Kentucky. He suggests the Service should have definite proof of location before accepting the 17-acre tract as the site of the fort. He points out that experience indicates historical documents and eighteenth century maps rarely locate a site with sufficient precision that it can be enclosed in a small tract. Perhaps archeological evidences must be sought to support the historical data if the spot is to be designated exactly.

FIVE SITES TO RETELL STORY OF JOHNSTON'S RETREAT

Plans are being completed for development of five historic sites selected along the route of General Johnston's retreat from Chattanooga to Atlanta during the War Between the States. It is proposed that each area be developed as a separate chapter of the story with narrative text, maps, orientation discs, overlooks and parking areas.

C. & O. CANAL SURVEYS PLANNED

A program of topographic and property surveys for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal has been planned by the Branch of Engineering Requests for eligibles to be appointed to 15 engineering positions (PWA) have been made. Approximately $36,000 is available for the engineering work which will include some hydraulic studies.
