Two hundred and fifity years ago, this area was part of the homeland of one of the most powerful Tribal Nations in the center of the continent. When the United States completedĀ the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, many things changed. Thousands of Cherokee had already moved into the region asĀ settlers flooded into Cherokee lands in Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. Fighting broke out. Over a period of 72 years, the Osage were forced through various treaties to surrender a majority of their homeland.
